Beautiful Anxiety
April 2019
For my final piece of my 3rd semester in glass, I wanted to address some of the anxiety and stress that I have dealt with throughout the semester and the past few years. I have always been told that I am one of the most bubbly and happy people and that I’m always in a good mood, but that’s not always I feel on the inside. I chose to use this opportunity to express this feeling in my glass work by creating a rainbow, transparent umbrella and several glass raindrops that hung from the inside of it. I then invited my classmates to stand under the piece and appreciate the beauty of the glass and all of the colors reflecting in it. While this piece is pleasing to look at, you must also know that it is under extreme stress because of the fishing line that is suspending it. This is absolutely my favorite piece that I have made in my glass career so far.
Materials:
Umbrella: plastic painted with Vitrial paint
Raindrops: hot sculpted glass
This piece was displayed in the “Undergraduate Scholarship Exhibition” at The Ohio State University’s Hopkins Hall Gallery in March 2020 and was awarded the Hoyt. T Sherman Memorial Scholarship .
