Fragile Universe

To kick off my 3rd semester in glass, we were given the challenge of combining spheres and bubbles in a new and abstract way. I came up with the idea to place the colored spheres inside of a clear bubble and seal it to allow the viewer to hold the piece and move the marbles around inside. I had been inspired by outer space and the Earth, so this piece is meant to resemble the universe and planets. The thin walls of the bubble and the weight of the marbles also gives the viewer a feeling of uneasiness and realization of how fragile our planet and the rest of the universe could be under the influence of humans.

Materials:

Bubble: blown glass

Marbles: hot sculpted with various colors of frit
